The gift worth about EUR 6 thousand will be presented on Thursday 22 May to Lukáš Ďuriga by a Linet representative together with Vlastimil Dolák, director of the Slovak partnership company Basco SK, during the 15th Congress of Slovak Anaesthesiologists in Piešťany.
“Our priority in the choice of bed was that my wife could be cared for by just one nurse. We will be helped by a nurse who will look after my wife all day,” stated Stano Ďuriga. The key feature of the Latera bed is the lateral movement of its mattress platform, the so-called lateral tilt. This allows carers to very easily turn the patient on the side. The seemingly simple mechanism greatly saves on the physical strain of nursing staff, especially if they care for heavy and immobile patients. Beds with a lateral tilt help in the daily nursing routine of changing, hygiene and dressing the wounds of patients. “Thanks to the lateral tilt one nurse can easily and more frequently position a bedridden person so that dangerous pressure sores do not appear,” added Marek Foltman, Linet’s commercial representative.
Latera Care beds designed for care of long-term immobile patients can also be utilised well in home care as is seen in the example of the paralysed young man Pavel Hejhal from the town of Milevsko in south Bohemia. He has spent 24 hours daily on the bed with a lateral tilt from Linet for three years now. “Thanks to the frequent positioning and attentive care of his mother I do not know what it is to have pressure sores,” stated Pavel Hejhal, who did not come to terms with his serious fate – after his accident he finished his secondary school leaving exams, he paints with his mouth and is thinking about further studies at university. Linet de facto developed the special bed with a lateral tilt for Pavel Hejhal and Pavel also tested the prototype of the product for several months. His remarks and the observations of his mother and nurses helped Linet to construct and produce the bed directly made to measure for immobile patients in home care.
The extraordinary dramatic story of the married couple began in 1992 when the now 47 year old Stano Ďuriga after an operation on his cervical spine remained paralysed with the exception of his left arm. The entire family joined forces after this unfortunate event. Stano’s parents and wife Zdenka looked after their son and she also went to work while three-year old Lukáš got used to caring for his paralysed father. The next unexpected blow came with Zdenka’s serious car accident and subsequent paralysis which is confirmed not only by statistics, but also by doctors who have not come across another such case in Slovakia. Zdenka Ďurigová spent more than a year in hospitals and then in a hospice without her condition getting significantly better, of course she will be coming back home in a week. The family would no longer be able to manage to care for itself so two professional nurses will help.
