Sci-fi design of Czech bed attracts Hollywood film-makers

Sci-fi design of Czech bed attracts Hollywood film-makers
The Multicare bed of the company Linet, a major world manufacturer of medical equipment, will play a role in the American-French film Babylon AD. This sci-fi film, in which the main role is played by action Hollywood film star Vin Diesel, is being currently shot at the Barrandov Film Studios in Prague (Czech Republic).
Linet hospital beds are no longer new to the film world. “Film-makers often approach us asking to hire a bed. For example, in the latest Bond film Casino Royal, agent 007 had a lovemaking scene on a hired Eleganza bed,” said Josef Heřman, head of Linet’s service department, who is also in charge of bed hire. But the makers of Babylon AD wanted to modify the bed so radically that they preferred to buy it. “Of course, we pointed out to the film-makers that once such changes were made, the product, which according to our price list ranges in value EUR from 8,5 to 11,5 thousand, can no longer be used for medical purposes for safety reasons,” stated Josef Heřman.
The author of the futuristic face of the Multicare bed is Czech designer Ivan Dlabač, who was awarded the National Design Prize for the Linet bed. Besides its interesting appearance, the Multicare, which is designed for critical patients, is also distinctive for its unique features. It is the only bed in the world fitted with a triple combination of functions – lateral tilt, X-ray scanning and weighing on the bed, of course the bed is equipped with actuators so it can be automatically adjusted. The Multicare film bed is currently stored in the Barrandov Studios and is waiting for approval regarding its final look.
The story of Babylon AD is set in the near future when the first cyborgs appear in the world – living beings perfected by mechanical or electronic components. The main hero, hired mercenary Thoorop (Vin Diesel), has been assigned the task to take a young woman from Russia to Canada. However during the journey he discovers that the woman has been infected with a virus and technology that could be misused by one secret American organisation to create the genetically modified Messiah.
Babylon AD is being shot on a budget of 60 million dollars and besides Vin Diesel in the main role, other stars will appear such as Gerard Depardieu, Vincent Cassel and actress Michelle Yeoh. The director is Mathieu Kassovitz, who scored a success with the film the Crimson Rivers with Jean Reno. You can look forward to the premiere of the film with the Czech Multicare bed in one of the roles next year.
Linet is the leader on the Czech market and is ranked among five of the biggest companies in the world in its field. Over 33,000 beds are manufactured annually at Linet in Želevčice u Slaného. The company also produces a broad range of mattresses, bedside cabinets and medical furniture.
